Biblical or Historical Mentoring: What Is It?

A mentor is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher – someone who can show you ways to get where you want to be. You can learn a lot about yourself by discovering how God has worked in the lives of other people who belong to Him. One way to do this is through biblical or historical mentoring. This involves trying to learn as much as you can about a person's life (either a Bible character or a historical figure) and then drawing some lessons from their experiences and decisions. Check it out! People are cool. It is always fun to realize that the people you are learning about are just regular folk like us.

You may choose to study a particular person's life for several reasons:

• Perhaps there is a character trait or life skill you want to develop in your own life that you see in theirs.
• Maybe you are interested in studying someone's life because they model ways to make a contribution to God's Kingdom that you would also like to make yourself.
• There might be an event in a person's life that sparks your interest, and you choose to investigate how they came to be ready for that time.
